The best Pocket alternatives now that Pocket is gone

Mozilla shut Pocket down on July 8, 2025. If you were one of the millions who used it, you've probably tried a couple of replacements already and felt something was off.

Usually that's because Pocket did two jobs, and most replacements only do one:

  1. Read later. Save an article, read it on the train, archive it.
  2. Keep it to find later. Save a link because it might be useful one day, then search for it months later.

Pick your replacement based on which of those you actually did. Here's an honest list.

If you mostly read later

Instapaper. The closest thing to Pocket in spirit. Clean reading view, works offline, simple. If you mainly read long articles on your phone, start here.

Matter. A beautiful reader, with highlights and a nice way to follow newsletters. Best if reading is a real hobby for you.

Readwise Reader. The power tool. Articles, PDFs, newsletters, RSS, highlights that flow into your notes. It costs more and has more to learn, and it's brilliant if you read for work.

GoodLinks. A tidy Apple-only reader you pay for once. Great if you live on iPhone, iPad and Mac.

If you mostly saved things to find later

This is where Pocket was quietly weak too. Its search was fine for article titles and not much else, and you couldn't add your own note about why something mattered.

Raindrop.io. A full bookmark manager with collections, tags and apps everywhere. Great if you like organising. We wrote a fair comparison with SaveSearch.

SaveSearch. Built for "I remember the idea, not the title". You save a link with an optional note about why. It keeps the title and caption on your device with no account, and with Pro it also keeps the full article text, YouTube captions and the words in screenshots, and searches all of it, plus your note. Every result tells you why it matched.

It's honest about the trade-off too: SaveSearch isn't a reader. It opens the original page. If you want to sit and read articles in a nice view, pick Instapaper or Matter for that, and use SaveSearch for the stuff you need to find again.

A note on Omnivore

If someone recommends Omnivore, it closed in late 2024 too. Two free read-later apps shutting down in a year is a good reason to check that whatever you pick lets you export everything whenever you like. SaveSearch lets you download a backup file of everything any time, and with Pro, Settings exports your whole library as Markdown, CSV and JSON.

Moving your old saves

Pocket's export window has closed, so if you didn't download your saves, they're gone. If you did, you have a file of links. SaveSearch doesn't import it automatically yet. For now, save the handful you still care about with a note on why. Being picky is no bad thing here: most of an old Pocket list is things you were never going to read.

Questions people ask

Is Pocket shut down?

Yes. Mozilla closed Pocket on July 8, 2025, and the window for exporting your saves has also closed.

What is the closest thing to Pocket?

For reading articles later, Instapaper is the closest in spirit. Matter and Readwise Reader go further on reading. If you mostly saved things to find again rather than to read, a save-and-search app fits better.
